Temperance Is A Virtue

Patience means waiting. Temperance means continuing to work while delaying gratification

Patience is a virtue is a well intentioned proverb, but more often than not, it’s not that helpful in health and fitness.

Patience means waiting to get what you want. This only works when someone else is going to give you that thing. And when it comes to transforming your health, fitness, and physique… nobody can do that for you. Waiting patiently is not the answer.

I’d like to pose an upgrade and more accurate version for you to hold near and dear.

Temperance Is A Virtue

Temperance is about tolerating the discomfort of delayed gratification while we continue to work hard toward our goals. There is no waiting in temperance. There is action in the form of consistent effort.

Those that can do the thing they need to do for long enough and tolerate the discomfort of delayed gratification for the longest are the ones that will get the best results.

  • We could eat the Snickers now and get instant gratification, or we can forgo it in favor of better making a calorie deficit to achieve our fat loss goals.

  • We could hit snooze now and stay warm under the covers, or we could put our feet on the cold floor and get to the gym to do the reps necessary to build muscle.

  • We could have a few drinks and stay out late on the summer night now, or we could stick to seltzer and turn in earlier to get the restful sleep needed to recover.

Temperance is the virtue we need more of to reach our goals.
