Ignoring the reality of our situation can be comforting at first, but eventually leads to misery.

We get it, facing the reality and consequences of our health and fitness actions (or inaction) is tough.

We often talk to new guys in our programs about starting where they’re at. This means facing the reality and magnitude of their situation without assigning blame, shame, or unnecessary pressure on themselves.

Define the stakes

This is an important component of any change.

Defining the stakes of the situation allows you to more clearly ask for the right help, paint a specific and realistic picture of where you are trying to go, and create a clear and targeted plan to help you get there.

Ignorance is NOT bliss, it’s misery.

I recently had to gently remind a guy in our Transformation Program 4 days in a row to weigh-in (this is part of the program). During his weekly check-in, he noted that he “didn’t want to weigh in because he knew he hadn't been adhering to his plan, and didn’t want to see the number on the scale confirm that”.

He wanted to push it off for 4 days in an attempt to course correct.

I give him huge props for sharing this, because this vulnerability in communication is what leads to accurate support and subsequent change.

Guys tend to not weigh themselves when they know their actions over the previous days haven’t been in alignment with their goals. This ignorance creates misery in the long term because it ignores the likely consequence of misaligned health and fitness behaviors.

So they continue. Until the pressure mounts too high, the belt gets too tight, and they start again.

Ignoring the reality of our situations protects us from the initial discomfort of recognition, but it creates long term misery by allowing misaligned actions and beliefs go unchecked.

Cherry-picking when we collect data creates a binary situation whereby we always expect positive outcomes because we shelter ourselves or ignore the negative ones. This is completely human, and yet doesn’t help us create long term change.

It’s better to stop and reevaluate rather than carry on dysfunctionally in a binary on/off or good/bad pattern.
