Thoughts become words, become actions, become your life.
How to use committed language to get to your health and fitness goals.
Lao Tzu, the ancient Chinese Taoist philosopher, said…
Be careful with your thoughts as they become your words.
Be careful with your words as they become your actions.
Be careful of your actions, as they are your life.
The things we think 24/7 on a rolling loop permeate our words, actions, relationships, and ulitmately make up our lives.
I hear busy guys say things like…
“I’ll try not to have the beers…”
“It’ll be a good weekend, unless I end up going out tonight…”
“If I don’t eat the pizza I’ll have a good weekend…”
These kinds of phrases are gateways to self fulfilling prophecies of low self esteem and the perpetuate fear of failure.
It's fair to say that we all have these thoughts. To make them work in our favor and make progress towards our goals, it's time to reframe them. If we don’t they’ll become our actions, and our actions are what make up our lives.
Turn passive thoughts in to intentional actions
Instead of saying try and if, use committed and intentional language like…
“I will.”
“I can.”
“I am.”
Get clear on your intentions and commit to them and actions that honor them.
“I’m not drinking tonight because I have an early workout. I’m drinking seltzer with dinner”.
“I want to enjoy my weekend and I don’t need to skip social events to do so. I am capable of having a plan and sticking to it. I am also willing to choose to skip an event if I’d prefer”.
“I can go for dinner with friends and choose foods that align with my goals. I don’t have to eat the pizza that they order. I will get the chicken salad instead”.
Guys hedge and use passive language because they want to keep an escape route out of tough situations.
Burn your boats, torch your escape routes, and forge ahead.
The only way we change anything is by committing to imperfect action and figuring it out.
Anything less is offensive to who you can be.
