People think you’re crazy until you win

…then you become a genius.

People will tell you that you’re doing too much, that you’re overdoing it and that it’s not healthy to do X. Until you win. Then they change their tune. They say they’re proud of you, that they always knew you could do it, that you inspire them to be better and to take on their own challenges. They want to do what you’ve done.

When people tell you you’re doing too much. It’s usually for 2 reasons;

  1. They worry you’ll change in the process and that the risk of changing for no reward is too high. They don’t want to see you disappointed. But when you win, they can make a value comparison between what you did and what you achieved. They tell you that now it seems worth it and that they are happy that your efforts panned out for you, that you achieved your goal, and that the situation is a net positive for you and them.

  2. You’ll outgrow them. Nobody wants to feel left behind. There is a very apt family guy skit about this HERE. Call me cynical, but often people around you don’t want you to be the best version of yourself. They want you to be the version of yourself that serves them best.

That makes sense. We are all wired for self preservation. Because the pack endures…but we don’t need that pack mentality as much anymore. Those that break away don’t get eaten by a bear. The risks they take by pioneering their own path aren’t potential death and famine. They’re opportunity and potential.

There are safety nets in place in society that if you want to start a business, you can.

If you want to quit your job to find a better one, you can.

If you want to kick the trend of saying you can’t, and go all in to achieve your health, fitness, and physique results, you absofuckinglutely can.

It’ll be hard and people will inadvertently try and stop you. People close to you, people you love. They’ll say that it’s too much…until you achieve it. Until you come out the other side of your efforts a changed person. More confident, more capable, more resilient.

Only then will they tell you that they’re inspired by you, that they’re impressed and proud, that they always knew you could do it.

The impetus to change will need to come from you and will need to endure the inevitable resistance and friction it meets along the way.
