What IS the best training program?

Bro split? Pull/Push/Legs? Kettlebells only? German volume training? 1 set to failure? Always 3 RIR? Only 7-8 RPE?

What IS the best way to train?

Fucked if I know. Actually. I think I know what it’s not...it’s not one answer.

As a generally athletic person and someone who’s interested (ok it’s more than that) in training, it’s interesting and necessary to figure out the ways that people (me in this case) respond to certain doses of particular stimuli.

Today’s training session for example was organized from experience and abides by the laws of specificity and progressive overload, but almost certainly not the methods of many systems.

I know if I train 2 big lifts on my lower body in the same session, the second lift will be garbage. I just don’t have the qualities needed to do both well, and the time it’d take to develop those qualities would not be worth it given my goal.

My upper body however can tolerate a considerable amount more volume if spread out over multiple sets of the same movement pattern (4 upper body pushing exercises).

This likely doesn’t fall within any specific popularized “method” of training, and it doesn’t have to.

Experience tells me that I specifically can do these things and not others. They’ve been customized over time to fit my needs, preferences, and requisite skills to continue to make progress.

We know most people walking into us as coaches Ethos Fitness + Performance off the street will likely benefit from doing a general training program. As coach’s, over time, and whilst doing our due diligence to teach people how to do things well (it’s not enough to just have someone do random stuff and hope they self organize to getting good at stuff...contrary to popular belief) we can develop a base of competency and then customize based off results.

We must do our due diligence long term to be able to customize accurately. This is a case for getting better at coaching the shit out of the foundations. Because if you can do that, you can customize more accurately and continue to drive results rather than just hoping the person gets better at “stuff”.
