The Microwave Test

Take a quick look at your microwave screen…how many seconds are left on it from the last time you couldn’t wait?

In the book “4000 Weeks”, author Oliver Burkeman notes how impatient we have become as a society and uses the microwave as an example. He notes how if you look at your microwave at home, the one in the office, or even the one you can see through the hatch window at the restaurant where you get your lunch from, there is almost always time left on the clock.

The user of the microwave just couldn’t wait any longer. Their time is just too compressed and their needs to get back to work, answer the most recent text, take that incoming phone call, or do anything else has cut the time they're willing to wait for adequately cooked/heated food by, I’d estimate an average of 20-40% in most cases (most meals take 3-4 mins to heat up and it feels like there is usually 90-30s remaining on most microwave screens I’ve seen, including mine.

I get it. In a world where time is money, money is freedom, and freedom is everything, trimming some time off your microwave meal seems completely reasonable.

Zoom out a little though, and you’ll see that impatience and inability to delay gratification permeates things that, unlike the microwave, can’t be cut short.

Namely, how you treat your health, fitness, and physique efforts.

Cutting corners on measuring calories means less certainty over your caloric deficit needed to lose body fat.

Skipping a few workouts over the course of the week all but erases your ability to grow muscle.

Chronically skimming 30 minutes off your sleep time each day adds to the inability to recover from and prepare for training and diet efforts needed to improve fitness and physique.

Impatiently chopping 20-40% off your efforts isn’t just unadvisable, it’s all but guaranteed to lead to frustration, stagnation, and subsequent backsliding.

Transforming your health, fitness, and physique will take longer than you hope it will but less than you think it will.

Meaning a month isn’t enough, but you won’t have to wait a year to see significant progress.

What it will take, is your consistently high effort to execute a specific and progressive plan over a long enough time horizon to guarantee results.
