You aren’t going to be the strongest lion, but you can be the fastest deer.

It hurts my noggin when I hear/see people wanting/doing the same training program that they saw The Rock, their favorite CrossFit athlete, or some monster at their local gym doing.

In no other arena would we think this was a good idea; (drive like an experienced driver, play like a seasoned musician, perform like an accomplished actor). But for some reason, when it comes to our fitness, aesthetic, health goals, logic vanishes to be replaced by our primitive ego brains.

It’s likely that, if you do want to become the lion (let’s say in the top 1% of a field) you’re already there or almost. Most of us, however, don’t need to be lions. We can instead focus on being the most capable deer possible.

The deer (yep sticking with this analogy) is most of us. Right in the middle of that bell curve. And for the most part, we are all pretty fucking similar. We can customize here and there, but our success lies in...wait for it...effort and consistency. Not a proprietary blend of herbal sports supplements and a unique combination of magic workout ideas.

Move in a variety of ways, often, and for a long time. Gradually increase the intensity to improve, and routinely take a break.

It takes far more than you/we can imagine being the lion (like it’s essentially your job added to a frightening genetic base). We aren’t fucking lions, but we can definitely be the fastest deers.

In summary; Don’t worry about what other people are doing. Take a deep breath, do simple things really well and with intensity for a long time. You’ll be mind blown at how good you feel, look, and perform.
