Middle Miles

If you’ve heard this idea before, it bears repeating.

If this is a new concept to you, then let it sting a little.

It’s the work you do in the dark, when nobody is watching, when there is no “attabois” and back patting being doled out, when you don’t get credit, and when nobody but you knows what you’re doing, that separates the guys who get results and those who don’t.

I call this the concept of the Middle Miles.

Picture yourself on the start line of a marathon.

Clapping spectators line the streets for a mile, voices motivate over the tannoy, bib numbers excitedly flutter in the light breeze, and the crowd is cheering you on.

The same scene awaits you in the last mile of the race as you feel the rush of your accomplishment peaking, then it’s ticker tape, the medal, the proud eyes of your family and supporters in the crowd.

In those moments, you’re all in.

You’re basking in the motivation and triumph. The pride and then the relief.

Between, however, the streets are all but empty.

From roughly mile 2 to 24 (that's 22 miles and 3-4 hours at a 7-9 min mile pace), you’re on your own.

Sure there are other runners on the road, but they’re on their own too.

This is the middle miles concept. The work you put in when you’re alone. When the fan fair dies down and the congratulations are a distant idea.

22 miles is 85% of a marathon. Those are some lonely and tough miles and you’ll only reach the ultimate goal if you dig in and run' em.

If you want to be successful in transforming your health, fitness, and physique you’ve got to accept and welcome the middle miles too.

Because here’s the thing - Most guys only show up when they're going to get credit for it.

When it's convenient. When it's easy. When everyone is watching.

These guys are outsourcing their responsibility and agency to an external factor they can’t control and it’s why they fail.

They’re waiting for someone else to save them.

The success you’ve already achieved in your life and the success you’ll achieve in the future is largely a result of the work you’ve done and are yet to do when nobody is watching.

That goes for your career, parenting, and definitely in your health, fitness and physique efforts.

It’s earned through your willingness to show up and run the middle miles.

Run 'em when they’re tough, when you don’t feel like it, and when the outcomes aren't certain.

Because you can never bet against the guy who keeps showing up and who runs the middle miles.

How Busy Guys Transform Their Health, Fitness, and Physique

PS.

Remember, you’re the engine that drives everything else, and that engine runs best with maintenance, not martyrdom.

By investing an efficient and effective time into your own health, fitness, and physique, you can give back 10x to those around you and show up at your best in the most important areas of your life.

Waiting until you're burnt out and at your wits end is a fool's errand.

Taking care of yourself isn't selfish, it's the most selfless thing you can do.
