Adherence Part 6; Passion

6 part Adherence series to help busy guys make lasting physique, health, and fitness changes.

Passion is generally defined as a barely controllable emotion. It’s fair to say that many guys may never get to the stage where they are uncontrollably excited to eat a salad, go to bed at a reasonable hour, or wake up early for a workout – and that is A-OK and not expected.

Here is why.

  1. Inspiration

  2. Motivation

  3. Intention

  4. Discipline

  5. Habit

  6. Passion

6. Passion

At this stage, you have been inspired to make a change, clarified your powerful internal motivation, have an intentional and goal focused plan, discipline helping you take action when you don’t feel inspired to, and you easily and habitually do things now that you once thought of as challenging tasks.

This is a formula for success that can be repeated in every endeavor of life.

If you stop here, you will be incredibly successful in your pursuit of improved physique, health, and fitness outcomes.

Passion can be thought of as a feeling that operates beyond internal motivation and has at this point, become an ingrained part of who you are as a person and the lifestyle you choose to live.

You can see why not everyone gets to the passion stage.

However, if you are passionate about being a great role model to your family, dad to your kids, or support to your partner for example, then health and fitness behaviors are the consistent actions you take to realize this.

Some of you may indeed become passionate about health and fitness during this process, which helps create systematic goal aligned behaviors as part of your life.

I’ve coached many guys who previously self identified as couch potatoes who now

  • love bodybuilding

  • compete in ironman triathlons

  • search for and use intricate cooking techniques

  • practice daily meditations.

Passion looks like many things to many guys. I define it in this instance as…

“An automated internal desire to take action in an area that adds subjective value to your quality of life.”

There is no single component of adherence that is more important than another.

Each works as a sequential stage along a spectrum. It would be very difficult to create a significantly meaningful 5. habit without the use of internal 2. motivation and 4. discipline to stick to an 3. intentional plan for example.

Adherence then, is a framework that can be adjusted and recycled ad infinitum.
