The 1 thing Ted Lasso gets wrong

It’s the hope that kills you and why I disagree with Ted

By now you’re all familiar with the phenomenon of Ted Lasso. The internet spoof turned award winning and beloved tv show.

It’s hard not to love Ted and his brand of thoughtful and honest leadership.

Ted gets so many things right;

  • He is aware of his lack of knowledge of the game of football.

  • He doesn't chastise himself for not knowing the answer.

  • He couldn't care less about what the media and world at large think of him.

  • He is committed to learning what he can to support his players, colleagues, and friends.

  • He knows he has his own shit going on and lets himself feel his feelings while working on bettering himself.

I agree with and admire Ted for so many reasons…apart from 1.

It’s the hope that kills you

It’s the hope that kills you is a phrase that echoes throughout seasons 1 and 2.

Ted takes umbrage with this and tells his team that he believes it’s the LACK of hope that does the damage.

But hope doesn't change anything alone. Hope needs help. Hope needs action.

Hope needs help

If you hope you’ll eat nutritious food tomorrow, you won’t.

If you hope you’ll make it to the gym tomorrow, you won’t.

If you hope you’ll get to bed before midnight tomorrow, you won’t.

If you hope you’ll have a physique you’re confident in, fitness that allows you to do whatever you want whenever you want, and lifelong health that serves you, you won’t.

You have to build that.

You have to take action.

You need a plan, motivation, commitment, discipline, and action. Hope alone gets us nowhere when the results we want to achieve are built on the actions and behaviors that only we control.

Reserve hope for the weather, games of chance, and other things you can’t control.

When it comes to achieving health, fitness, and physique results, take action.
