Kevin from The Office taught me a valuable fitness lesson

I’m confident you’ve all seen The Office. In the later seasons, once “the world's best boss”, Michael Scott, has left, the company interviews Robert California (James Spader) who with his creepy yet charming magnetism, somehow lands himself the role of CEO.

Kevin Malone…business and fitness philosopher extraordinaire

Keen to revolutionize Dunder Mifflin, Robert asks the staff to come up with “game changing” ideas, and singles out Kevin Malone, known more for his doofy adorability than his creative spark, for his contribution.

Kevin ponders before suggesting that the vending machine should be reorganized to put the best cookies in the D4 slot, rather than the A1 slot, because D4 is where the eye is drawn to.

Robert pauses before interpreting Kevin’s suggestion as a savvy business move whereby the company should double down on its best sellers, and spend less time on the lowest performing items.

What’s the lesson for you?

Kevin has a point. I talk to guys most days who tell me that they’re taking their multivitamins and using their blue blocker glasses every day but they aren’t seeing the results they want, and that's because they aren’t walking, strength training, sleeping enough, or eating nutritious foods.

This is a classic example of putting the highest value items in the A1 slot rather than in the D4 slot.

What should you do instead?

Look at your schedule and see which of the following high value items can be built in to your day;

  • Eat more nutritious food

  • Get more/better sleep

  • Increase your daily activity (walking/strength training)

  • Lower incoming stressors

Imagine you can only pick 1. Choose the one with the simplest application, then work for a few days or more to move it closer to the D4 slot in your proverbial vending machine.
