3 ways to overcome a plateau in your training and diet

Do 1, a combo, or all 3 of these things to break through a plateau

Breaking through a plateau is often the toughest part of change outside of getting started in the first place. To stack the odds in your favor and increase your likelihood of success, you can do 3 things…

  1. Increase your effort

  2. Lower task difficulty

  3. Reduce friction and remove obstacles in your way

Imagine your car was stuck in the mud. To get your car to move you could...

  1. Push harder (increase effort).

  2. Make the car lighter (lower difficulty).

  3. Put sticks/rocks under wheels and move any debris from in front of the car (reduce friction/remove obstacles).

You need to push to get started

If you never push at all, then you’ll never know what to do to improve your strategy or get your car out. Your car will stay there forever and decay away.

The same goes with health and fitness. We need to apply some initial effort and be ok taking imperfect action to get going, before we can optimize our situation.

We can also stack the odds in our favor by making our goal and plan realistic, and by removing obstacles and potential pitfalls in our enviroment.

If we don’t, then like our car, we’ll stay stuck in the mud and waste away. Or, if we change nothing, and keep pushing, we’ll eventually get buried or burn out.

Here are a few things you can do to make getting going easier;

  1. Hire a coach with experience helping people like you get results.

  2. Follow a clear and specific plan for your goals, needs, and preferences.

  3. Make your goal both challenging and realistic.

  4. Tailor your environment to support your goals by removing temptations, making healthy behaviors obvious, and enlisting social support.
